This Week on TV (3/23-3/29)

In the Motherhood

(You can view TV Envy’s Midseason Programming Schedule here.)

MONDAY (3/23)
  • The Secret Life of the American Teenager (ABC Family, 8pm):  “Amy gives birth to her son and has a difficult time adjusting to life as a mom.” Unfortunately for her, society is no longer interested in single mothers of one child.
  • Gossip Girl (CW, 8pm):  “Lily and Rufus make lists of their past lovers.” I think even Gossip Girl would qualify that as TMI.
  • Animal Cops: Phoenix (Animal, 10pm):  “A skunk gets trapped in an elevator shaft.” Well that stinks.
  • Table for 12 (TLC, 10pm):  Series premiere. “Betty Hayes, mother of three sets of multiples (twins, twins, sextuplets), is sent to the spa on her birthday, while the rest of the family plans a special celebration at home.” Great. More stuff for her to clean up later.

This Week on TV (2/9-2/15)

Survivor: Tocantins

(You can view TV Envy’s Midseason Programming Schedule here.)

MONDAY 2/9)

NOTE: A President Obama press conference will interfere with the previously scheduled programming.

  • The Secret Life of the American Teenager (ABC Family, 8pm):  “Ben and Amy’s relationship hits a rough patch when Ben tells her he needs some space.” The pressure of buying a Valentine’s Day gift was just too much for him.
  • One Way Out (Discovery, 9pm):  “The host braves a high-speed barrage of tennis balls and steep plunges into kiddie pools before becoming the projectile in a human catapult.” Idiotic stunts have just become more financially appealing.
  • The Girls of Hedsor Hall (MTV, 9pm):  Series premiere. “In the opener, 12 rude and crude bad girls from the U.S. enroll in a British finishing school for a chance to transform their lives and win a $100,000 trust.” The goal? To become the next or Lily Allen.
  • CSI: Miami (CBS, 10pm):  “Horatio believes that prominent defense attorney (Sean Combs) is involved in the cover-up of a murder.” Diddy doesn’t cover-up murders. That’s what his personal assistants are for.

New Season for Secret Life

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Drama, Prime Time, ABC, Cable, Gossip, Renewals,

Secret Life of the American TeenagerIn the middle of all the winter reality and new small-screen comedies, ABC Family’s surprise hit will reappear next month. That’s right: is returning Monday, January 5.

The first season was split into two as the show began to create more buzz and excitement. The eleventh episode “Just Say No,” the last to air before the fall break, drew more than four and half million viewers. It’s official: the family drama is a success.

Ten more episodes will now air for the second season, bringing viewers up-to-date on all the relationships, twists and, of course, the status of Amy Jergens (Shailene Woodley) and her as-yet-unborn baby. For those who want a refresher, ABC Family will air the first eleven episodes in an all-day marathon January 4.

Can’t sit in front of the TV that Sunday? The first season of the series will also be available on DVD as of December 30.

90210 to Reunite Walsh Twins?

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Prime Time, The CW, Gossip,

Brandon and Brenda Walsh fans (many of whom are really just Beverly Hills, 90210 fans, now older but perhaps not wiser in their TV choices) have been waiting for the day when the new series will reunite two very important members from the original cast: Brenda and Brandon Walsh. New buzz suggests that Jason Priestley and Shannen Doherty may be paired on the show again…just not the way we really want.

Priestley has at last agreed to appear on the set, though not to reprise his role as Brandon. Instead, he’ll come back to direct. Priestley previously directed eighteen episodes of the original series way back in the 90s, and has more recently directed a couple of episodes of the ABC Family hit .

“I think I sort of ran the gamut with Brandon - 249 episodes,” said to Access last June. “I think Brandon did his time.”

But Brenda did not. CW reps have confirmed that will do two new episodes for the series. Will Priestley direct his on-screen sister? On that issue, the CW isn’t confirming or denying the possibility. “I think it would be a kick for Jason,” said executive producer Gabe Sachs. “But we don’t know whether that will happen yet.”

The Secret Life of the American Teenager: Review

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Drama, Kids, Prime Time, ABC, Cable, Editorial,

Amy

The compelling promos, tons of press and Seventh Heaven association might have been enough to rope me into watching the premiere of ABC Family’s , but it was the mere presence of Molly Ringwald in the cast which sealed the deal. And so it was that last night during prime time, I found myself watching cable instead of network TV. I don’t think it was a mistake.

Rollicking pop music kicked off the top of the episode, which immediately plunged its viewers headlong into teen pregnancy. Seriously, the main character Amy (played by Shailene Woodley) was barely introduced (as a marching band member) before she was in the restroom staring at the positive results from a home pregnancy kit. No time wasted here on introductions.

Actually, it felt more than a little forced. The audience was given no time to connect with this character in any way before BAM! she’s knocked up. And then, the beginning credits rolled.

Teenager’s Secret is Out - Will Success Follow?

The Secret Life of the American Teenager cast photo

I’m not going to mince words, here - I’ve never been a huge fan of ‘s programming. I’ve stopped on the occasional PG movie and watched re-runs of Who’s Line, sure, but I’ve never been driven to see one of the channel’s original shows. At least, not until now. I accidentally came across a promo the other day for the network’s new The Secret Life of the American Teenager, and stunningly I found it absolutely gripping.

Even more amazingly, I really want to see the premiere. The episode airs July 1, but to whet your appetite the ABC Family’ site is showing the same promo which got under my skin, if you want to catch a glimpse.
